>FAQ
- Will etching and marking damage my stuff?
We etch using a laser, not a drill bit, which allows us to precisely control the process. Unlike traditional etching and inscribing, a laser adds almost no pressure to the item and very little heat to adjacent areas. Without an actual bit to create friction and pressure, there is little chance an item could be damaged as a side effect. We also have more than one method of marking, applying the best process for the item and material it is made out of.
- Are the etching/markings permanent?
Laser etching is permanent. If you want something less than permanent, we suggest decals.
- Can you do color?
Etching has limited coloring options, depending on material and color. Most material offer up to three color tones: the base, when etched lightly, and when etched deeply. For materials such as a painted metals, only two tones will show, the paint color and the underlying metal color.
Paints and clear coats are available to add color to an already etched item. Paints are best applied by first masking the surface of the item, then etching off the areas where color needs to be added, effectively making a stencil. Applying the paint over the underlying material, rather than over the original paint/anodization, allows for a smoother finish and stronger durability. Color combinations will not be photorealistic, but are great for logos and designs.
- I have my own picture, can I use it?
Of course, send it in and we will let you know how well we can work with it and what options you have. Just remember that the higher quality the picture, the higher quality of the etching.
